The H. Richard Nesson Fellowship at Brigham and Women's Hospital was established in 1997 to recognize Dr. Nesson's 15 years of extraordinary leadership as president of the Hospital and his lifelong commitment to public and community health. Dr. Nesson was one of the nation’s leaders in health care policy and an unfailing advocate for a system that provides both access and quality health care to all of the public.
The H. Richard Nesson Fellowship is a tribute to that legacy. The two-year fellowship is awarded annually to an outstanding and promising health care professional interested in health care policy, local or state community health research, or other community clinical care which addresses society's critical and emerging health care needs. Individuals selected for the Nesson Fellowship embody Dr. Nesson's characteristics of trailblazing leadership, the ability to anticipate and shape the future, and a lifelong commitment to provide access and quality health care for all citizens.

Prior to Applying
In order to be considered for the fellowship, applicants must meet the following qualifications:
- Member of the Brigham and Women's Hospital workforce
- Doctoral degree in clinical science (MD, PhD) or an equivalent advanced degree
- Established interest in community health, health care policy, local and state community health research, and/or other community clinical care that addresses critical emerging health care needs among vulnerable populations, in support of BWH strategic commitment to Health Equity
- Capable of providing a two-year commitment

Progress Reports
Progress reports are required from the award recipient prior to the end of each award year. In the final year, fellows are to produce a document outlining the purpose, scope, and results of their particular fellowship, including a set of recommendations for review, consideration, or implementation. Recipients will present this paper and a final lecture upon completion of the fellowship.
Compensation
Fellows are provided financial support for the duration of the fellowship.

Current Fellows
Richard Joseph, MD, MBA, of the Department of Medicine, was selected as the 2020 H. Richard Nesson Fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital. His project, "Establishing the BWH Center for Community Wellness", focuses on advancing the work of the BWH Center for Community Wellness (CCW) at Sportsmen's Tennis & Enrichment Center in Dorchester.
Eric Goralnick, MD, MS, of the Department of Emergency Medicine, and Monik Jiménez, ScD, of the Division of Women's Health have been selected as the 2019 H. Richard Nesson Fellows at Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Goralnick's project, “Firearm Screening and Counseling,” focuses on developing and testing a firearm screening and counseling pathway in Boston emergency departments and ambulatory care centers. Dr. Jiménez’s project, “Examining the cardiovascular complications of incarceration,” seeks to study cardiovascular conditions among incarcerated adults to promote the provision of equitable health care.
